After the Korean War (June 25, 1950), and negotiated and then designated the DMZ [demilitarized zone] 2km away from the truce line on each side of the border. As one of the last relics of the Cold War, the DMZ attracts a great deal of public interest. DMZ tourist sites have been created to quench peoples’ curiosity on this unique area where tension and peace coincide. These sites are especially popular among foreign tourists. This is a very special tour destination in , which offers a real vivid eye-opening experience of the Korean War and a dramatic sense of the tragedy of the separated family members between the two from the division of the peninsula. The 3rd tunnel is only 44 kilometers or less than an hour drive from Seoul and was discovered in October 1978. It runs through bedrock at a depth of about 73 meters below ground. Capable of moving a full division per hour plus their weapons, it is evidently designed for a surprise attack on Seoul. This tunnel was found in March 1975 and 13km away from Cholwon. This arch-shaped tunnel is designed to convey heavy weapon such as tank and field artillery. It even has rail way and assembly space inside the tunnel. This 3.5km long and 160 meter deep tunnel is capable to send 30,000soldiers through the 3 exits of the tunnel by 1 hour.
